Recent changes in household and family patterns in France are explored using data from official sources, including the 1982 census. These changes include a growth in the number of single-person households, particularly among the elderly; more one-parent families, primarily because of divorce; an increase in the number of couples in which both members work outside the home; and a decline in the number of children per family.
