This is a review of the literature produced prior to the mid-1960s concerning the population of Canada from 1608 to 1760, the period of the French colonial regime. The author analyzes these studies, with a focus on their use and assessment of sources, and evaluates their findings on population composition and structure, population change, and population policies.
