The author first points out that by the year 2000, half of the world's population will live in urban areas. The consequences of this rapid urbanization are considered in terms of living conditions, the environment, economic activity, and economic and social disparities. The steps that need to be taken to cope with rapid urbanization, particularly in the developing world, are outlined.
