Using data from censuses of Egypt for the years 1937 to 1976, the author focuses on developments in the distribution of the population and in growth rate differentials between regions. The geographical concentration of the population, the rate of urban population growth relative to that of the rural population, and aspects of spatial distribution within Greater Cairo are considered.
