Several years of experience with the copper IUD have shown no change in the rate of cupremia among women using it; the daily "leakage" of copper is minimal, much less than the alimentary intake, and occurs only locally. In the exceptional cases where pregnancies have occurred through IUD failure, no teratogenic effects have been reported.
