Stage 1 is defined by a demarcation line, a thin but definite structure that separates the avascular retina anteriorly from the vascularized retina posteriorly. There is abnormal branching or arcading of vessels leading up to the demarcation line that is relatively flat, white, and lies within the plane of the retina.;
