NCIt definition : When testing the newborn infant for neuromuscular maturity, the scarf sign test is carried out by drawing the newborn's arm across the chest to the opposite shoulder until resistance is felt. In term infants, the elbow should not cross the midline of the chest.;

Alternative definition : NICHD: A test of neuromuscular maturity, which measures resistance to shoulder adduction, used during the clinical assessment of gestational age and muscle tone during the first five days of life.;
