NCIt definition : A species of facultatively anaerobic, Gram positive, cocci shaped bacteria in the
phylum Firmicutes. This species is positive for catalase and urease, and negative
for coagulase and oxidase. It can ferment xylose, trehalose, arabinose, mannose, fructose,
lactose, sucrose, turanose, and mannitol, but not maltose, turanose, cellobiose, or
xylitol. S. xylosus is commensal on the skin of humans and animals, is used in the
production of cheese and sausage and is a rare opportunistic pathogen in humans that
can cause dermititis, urinary tract infections and bacteremia.;
