NCIt definition : A species of facultatively anaerobic/microaerophilic, Gram positive, rod shaped bacteria in the phylum Firmicutes. This species is nonmotile, ferments D ribose, galactose, arabinose and maltose, catalase positive, does not ferment mannose and hydrolyzes hippurate. L. brevis is non pathogenic but may be a concern for brewers due to its beer and wine spoilage ability.;
