reduce nitrate, is non-fermenting, non-acid fast, and does not produce hydrogen sulfide;
some subspecies are lipophilic and others non-lipophilic. C. afermentans is commensal,
but can become pathogenic and has been associated with prosthetic valve endocarditis.;
