NCIt definition : An endocrine disorder characterized by decreased production of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid glands. It is usually caused by damage of the parathyroid glands during head and neck surgery. Signs and symptoms include muscle cramps, abdominal pain, dry skin, brittle nails, cataracts, tetany, and convulsions.;

Alternative definition : CTCAE: A disorder characterized by a decrease in production of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid glands.; NICHD: Decreased production or secretion of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid gland, resulting in hypocalcemia due to decreased release of calcium and phosphate from bone matrix, decreased renal calcium reabsorption, and decreased renal production of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D-3, which decreases intestinal absorption of calcium. Hypoparathyroidism is also associated with hyperphosphatemia as a result of hypophosphaturia.;
