NCIt definition : Human SIM1 wild-type allele is located within 6q16.3-q21 and is approximately 80 kb
in length. This allele, which encodes single-minded homolog 1 protein, plays roles
in regulation of transcription, neurogenesis, and may also play a role in regulation
of feeding behavior. Mutations in this gene are associated with a Prader-Willi-like
phenotype.;
NCIt note : Mouse Sim1 is essential for formation of the supraoptic and paraventricular (PVN)
nuclei of the hypothalamus, which is implicated in the regulation of body weight:
PVN neurons express the melanocortin-4 receptor and appear to be physiologic targets
of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, which inhibits food intake. (Hum Mol Genet.
2000; 9: 101-8.);
