Preferred Label : Stage IVA Laryngeal Cancer AJCC v7;
NCIt synonyms : Stage IVA Larynx Carcinoma; Stage IVA Laryngeal Carcinoma; Laryngeal Cancer Stage IVA; Stage IVA Carcinoma of the Larynx; Stage IVA Carcinoma of Larynx; Stage IVA Laryngeal Cancer;
NCIt related terms : Stage IVA Laryngeal Throat Cancer;
NCIt definition : Stage IVA includes: (T4a, N0, M0); (T4a, N1, M0); (T1, N2, M0); (T2, N2, M0); (T3,
N2, M0); (T4a, N2, M0); T4a: Supraglottis: Moderately advanced local disease. Tumor
invades through the thyroid cartilage and/or invades tissues beyond the larynx (e.g.,
trachea, soft tissues of neck including deep extrinsic muscle of the tongue, strap
muscles, thyroid, or esophagus). Glottis: Moderately advanced local disease. Tumor
invades through the outer cortex of the thyroid cartilage and/or invades tissues beyond
the larynx (e.g., trachea, soft tissues of neck including deep extrinsic muscles of
the tongue, strap muscles, thyroid, or esophagus). Subglottis: Moderately advanced
local disease. Tumor invades cricoid or thyroid cartilage and/or invades tissues beyond
the larynx (e.g., trachea, soft tissues of neck including deep extrinsic muscles of
the tongue, strap muscles, thyroid, or esophagus). N0: No regional lymph node metastasis.
N1: Metastasis in a single ipsilateral lymph node, 3 cm or less in greatest dimension.
N2: Metastasis in a single ipsilateral lymph node, more than 3 cm but not more than
6 cm in greatest dimension, or in multiple ipsilateral lymph nodes, none more than
6 cm in greatest dimension, or in bilateral or contralateral lymph nodes, none more
than 6 cm in greatest dimension. M0: No distant metastasis. (AJCC 7th ed.);
Alternative definition : NCI-GLOSS: Stage IV is divided into stages IVA, IVB, and IVC. In stage IVA, one of
the following is found: (1) cancer has spread through the thyroid cartilage and/or
has spread to tissues beyond the larynx such as the neck, trachea, thyroid, or esophagus;
cancer may have spread to one lymph node on the same side of the neck as the original
tumor and the lymph node is smaller than 3 centimeters; or (2) cancer has spread to
one or more lymph nodes anywhere in the neck and the lymph nodes are smaller than
6 centimeters; cancer may have spread to tissues beyond the larynx, such as the neck,
trachea, thyroid, or esophagus. Vocal cords may not move normally.;
