NCIt definition : Human RELA wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 11q13 and is approximately
9 kb in length. This allele, which encodes transcription factor p65 protein, plays
a role in the modulation of transcription by RNA polymerase II. Infrequently, lymphoproliferative
disorders are associated with the translocation t(11;14)(q14;q32) of this gene. Amplification
or increased expression of this gene has also been noted in some cases of squamous
carcinomas of the head and neck and adenocarcinomas of the breast and stomach.;
NCIt note : The RELA gene product is a subunit of the nuclear factor kappa-B complex, a second
messenger which activates the transcription of a number of genes in multiple tissues.
The active form of the transcription factor p65 protein is a homodimer with nuclear
factor kappa B polypeptides p50 or p52, which are capable of activating transcription
in the nucleus. Under ordinary circumstances, p65 is found in the cytosol as a component
of the nuclear factor kappa B protein complex associated with the inhibitory factor
I kappa B. Activation releases the nuclear factor kappa B proteins from I kappa B
and allows their nuclear import, resulting in transcriptional activation.;
