NCIt definition : Human PHB1 wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 17q21.33 and is approximately
11 kb in length. This allele, which encodes prohibitin 1 protein, plays a role in
the repression of cellular proliferation. Mutations in this gene have been linked
to sporadic breast cancer.;
NCIt note : The PHB gene is expressed as two transcripts with varying lengths of 3-prime UTR.
The longer transcript is present at higher levels in proliferating cells; the longer
3-prime UTR may act as a trans regulator. The human prohibitin family consists of
one functional gene and four processed pseudogenes: PHBP1, PHBP2, PHBP3, and PHBP4.;
