CISMeF synonym : CD227;
CISMeF acronym : MUC1;
NCIt definition : Mucin-1 (1255 aa, 122 kDa) is encoded by the human MUC1 gene. This protein plays
a role in both signaling and cell adhesion.;
NCIt note : Mucin-1 is a type I membrane protein (major form) containing a large extracellular
tandem repeat domain and a SEA domain. The number of repeats is highly polymorphic.
This protein is expressed as at least 10 isoforms produced by alternative splicing.
Isoforms 5 and 9 are secreted. Isoform 7 behaves as a receptor and binds isoform 5;
binding induces phosphorylation of isoform 7, alters cell morphology, and initiates
cell signaling. Cleaved isoform 1 forms a heterodimer with its secreted C-terminal
peptide. Isoforms 1 and 7 are transphosphorylated on serine and tyrosine residues.; Mucin-1 is cleaved into Mucin-1 subunit alpha (MUC1-NT or MUC1-alpha) and Mucin-1
subunit beta (MUC1-beta or MUC1-CT). (UniProt);
