NCIt definition : An infectious disease that is caused transmitted by the bite of a rat. Two species of bacteria can cause the infection: Streptobacillus moniliformis and Spirillum minus.;

Alternative definition : NICHD: An acute infection that is caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis (in North America) or Spirillum minus (in Asia), which is transmitted primarily by rodents; it is characterized by fever, myalgia, arthralgia, and petechial rash. When infections are acquired without a bite the resulting illness is called Haverhill Fever.;
