Alternative definition : NICHD: An infection that is caused by the nematode Loa loa, which is contracted via the bite of a deer fly. In temporary residents of endemic areas, the most common clinical manifestation is Calabar swelling (localized angioedema), typically on the extremities. Infected permanent residents of endemic areas typically manifest eye disease related to wandering of the adult worm. Encephalopathy, cardiomyopathy, and renal disease are related to microfilaraemia.;
