Alternative definition : MMHCC: A focal atypical, non-invasive epithelial lesion with minimal atypia and low
malignant potential. Atypical hyperplasia, DIN and certain grades of DCIS are considered
human homologs. Focal increase of epithelium that contains cells with atypical nuclei.
Limited to focal lesions with mild to moderate cytological atypia. When transplanted,
the foci grow in gland cleared mammary fat pads but not in the subcutaneous tissue.
Low grade lesions seldom undergo malignant transformation and do not metastasize.
Mammary Intraepithelial Neoplasia (MIN) has been proposed by the Annapolis Pathology
Panel as the preferred term. It is considered the mouse counterpart or synonym for
Atypical Hyperplasia, DIN in the human breast. Some pathologists believe that these
proliferations are premalignant. Nuclear atypia corresponds to a nuclear score of
one in the Elston-Ellis grading system.;
