NCIt definition : An orally bioavailable sickle cell hemoglobin S (HbS) stabilizer and polymerization
inhibitor, with potential use in the treatment of sickle cell disease (SCD). Upon
oral administration, osivelotor targets and covalently binds to HbS. This increases
the affinity of Hb for oxygen and stabilizes it in its oxygenated, oxy-hemoglobin
(oxyHb) state. This prevents HbS polymerization and HbS aggregation, which reduces
red blood cell (RBC) sickling, improves RBC deformability, reduces whole blood viscosity,
and decreases hemolytic anemia.;
