BHB may activate the surface receptor hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 2 (HCAR2) and induce the transcriptional regulator homeodomain-only protein (HOPX), thereby inhibiting cell proliferation in intestinal epithelial cells that express HCAR2 and HOPX.;
