NCIt definition : A human plasma-derived polyvalent antibody preparation consisting of human immunoglobulin
M (IgM), IgA and IgG, with potential antibacterial, antiviral and immunomodulatory
activities. Upon administration of trimodulin, the IgM component may increase the
elimination of infectious pathogens including viruses and bacteria in comparison to
immunoglobulin regimens lacking IgM. IgM is the major immunoglobulin secreted during
the primary immune response and plays a significant role in compliment activation
and in the neutralization of bacterial and viral toxins. In addition, the polyvalent
antibody preparation may modulate both the pro- and anti-inflammatory processes and
prevent the attack of host tissues by the immune system. Low levels of plasma IgG,
IgM and IgA has been associated with reduced survival in severe sepsis or septic shock.;
