Preferred Label : Ribaxamase;
NCIt definition : An orally administered recombinant beta-lactamase that can be used to protect the
gut microbiome from disruption caused by intravenous (IV) administered beta-lactam
antibiotics. Upon administration, ribaxamase hydrolyzes the beta-lactam ring of susceptible
antibiotics that were administered intravenously and are excreted into the intestines.
This degrades the beta-lactam antibiotic, may prevent antibiotic-mediated damage in
the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and may protect the gut microbiome. This may also
prevent the overgrowth and associated infection with Clostridioides difficile and
antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Ribaxamase is not systemically absorbed and does not
interfere with the efficacy of IV beta-lactam antibiotics.;
