NCIt definition : A radioconjugate composed of the beta-amyloid binding agent Pittsburgh compound B
(PiB), a derivative of the amyloid-binding dye thioflavin T (ThT), that is conjugated
to the radioisotope carbon C11, with potential amyloid imaging activity upon positron
emission tomography (PET). Upon administration of carbon C 11 PiB, the PiB moiety
targets and binds to beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, which can then be detected
and analyzed using PET imaging. Increased production and concentration of amyloid
beta protein and the deposition of amyloid plaques in the brain are correlated with
the cognitive decline seen in neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia, Alzheimer's
disease (AD) and chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI).;
