I. bartlettii is negative for lecithinase, lipase, catalase and urease, and is unable to hydrolyze esculin or gelatin, or reduce nitrate to nitrite, but positive for acid phosphatase, galactosidase and beta-glucuronidase. The species was originally isolated from fecal samples.;
