Respiratory distress syndrome in premature infants - CISMeF
Respiratory distress syndrome in premature infantsOMIM Phenotype
Preferred Label : Respiratory distress syndrome in premature infants;
Type : Other, mainly phenotypes with suspected mendelian basis;
Alternative titles and symbols : Hyaline membrane disease; Rds of prematurity;
Description : Respiratory distress syndrome in the newborn is the main cause of mortality and morbidity
in premature infants. RDS is characterized by deficient gas exchange that is caused
by diffuse atelectasis and high-permeability lung edema that results in fibrin-rich
alveolar deposits called 'hyaline membranes.' Developmental deficiency of lung surfactant
is the main cause of RDS in premature infants (Ramet et al., 2000). The risk of bronchopulmonary
dysplasia increases with the severity of RDS (Clark and Clark, 2005).;
