Description : The neural retina leucine zipper (NRL), a basic motif-leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factor of the Maf- subfamily, is a phosphorylated protein that is specifically expressed in rod photoreceptors and pineal gland, but not in cones or other cell types. NRL is required for rod photoreceptor differentiation during retinal development (summary by Kanda et al., 2007).;
