LOINC description : The Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS) is a behavioral assessment tool for the measurement of pain in full-term and pre-term infants. The tool was developed at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (Canada) and uses the behaviors that nurses have described as being indicative of infant pain or distress. It is composed of six indicators--one physiologic and five behavioral indicators. Total pain scores range from 0-7. NIPS is recommended for neonates/infants less than 2 months of age but can be used up to 1 year of age, and is used in the neonatal care setting, including but not limited to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Newborn Nursery.
