LOINC description : The Ebola Zaire PCR assay presumptively detects Ebola Zaire virus, a single-stranded RNA virus identified in the 2014 West Africa outbreak. The assay is used for testing individuals with signs and symptoms of Ebola virus infection, those who are at risk for or may have been exposed to the Ebola Zaire virus, or in accordance with current public health recommendations. The definitive identification of the Ebola Zaire virus requires additional testing and confirmation procedures in consultation with public health. This term was developed for, but is not limited to, use with the Ebola Zaire Target 1 (EZ1) real-time reverse transcription (rRT) polymerase chain reaction (TaqMan ) assay (EZ1 assay), which is run on plasma or whole blood specimens. As of August 2014, the EZ1 assay is approved for use under an FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) [http://www.fda.gov/downloads/MedicalDevices/Safety/EmergencySituations/UCM408334.pdf] by specified laboratories and clinical laboratory personnel who have been trained on instruments authorized by the U.S. Department of Defense.;
