LOINC description : Fetal scalp blood testing is a technique used in obstetrics during labor to confirm whether fetal oxygenation is sufficient. Two constituents that are commonly tested by this method are pH and lactate, both being indicators of acid base homeostasis. A low pH and high level of lactate indicate that there is acidosis, which in turn is associated with hypoxia. Observational studies have shown that lactate analysis has similar or better predictive values compared with pH analysis to measure hypoxia in the detection of short term neonatal morbidity. The specimen can be obtained in cord blood or fetal scalp. This term was based on, but not limited to, the Lactate Pro POCT.;
