LOINC long common name : Fetal blood [Volume] in Blood by Flow cytometry (FC);
LOINC short name : Fetal blood Vol Bld FC;
LOINC description : Measures the volume of fetal blood in the maternal circulation as calculated from
the flow cytometry fetal cell count. Fetal maternal hemorrhage (FMH) is the transfer
of fetal blood to the maternal circulation. For Rh negative mothers this may cause
anti-D sensitization that can result in hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) in
subsequent pregnancies. Anti-D immunoglobulin can be given to prevent sensitization.
Quantification of the volume of FMH can aid in the calculation of the dose of anti-D
immunoglobulin needed to prevent sensitization. Flow cytometry can measure presence
of fetal red cells in the mother's blood sample using either fetal hemoglobin (HbF)
or D positive antigens on the fetal cells. Glycophorin A (CD235a) may also be included
in the method.;
