LOINC description : Antibody screening is used to demonstrate unexpected antibodies (other than ABO) and
is performed on both donors and recipients to help ensure compatibility between recipient
antibodies and donor red cells. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a blood bank agent that
reduces antibody screening incubation time by excluding water and therefore allowing
red cells to come closer together during centrifugation. PEG may enhance the expression
of warm antibodies and auto-antibodies. A downside to PEG is that use may lead to
false positive reactions at 37C from nonspecific agglutination. An advantage of PEG
use is that it may provide greater sensitivity than LISS or albumin.;
