LOINC description : Screening for bacteria with extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) enzymes may be
performed using a rectal swab plated onto a culture medium (e.g. MacConkey agar) containing
high concentraitons of a 3rd generation cephalosporin. Any bacterial growth will be
identified and full susceptibility performed. Patients infected with gram negative
bacteria with ESBL enzymes are a concern for inpatients, especially those who are
admitted from extended care facilities. This is for infection control purposes to
know a patient needs to be on contact isolation.;
