LOINC description : Determining the ratio of urinary-free cortisol to cortisone is useful in evaluating patients with apparent mineralocorticoid excess (AME) syndrome and other forms of adrenal insufficiency. Higher ratios ( 0.5) are observed in patients with AME syndrome and indicate insufficient levels of 11-beta-hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11-beta HSD2), which converts cortisol to cortisone. Lower ratios ( 0.15) suggests low activity of the 11-beta-HSD1 enzyme, which converts cortisone to cortisol, and may explain reduced effectiveness of cortisone treatment.;
