LOINC display name : EBV-encoded RNA 1 Probe Ql (Tiss);
LOINC long common name : Epstein-Barr virus-encoded RNA 1 [Presence] in Tissue by Probe;
LOINC short name : EBV-encoded RNA1 Tiss Ql Probe;
LOINC description : This term is used for the detection of nuclear Epstein-Barr virus-encoded RNA 1 (EBER1)
by in situ hybridization on tissue. Presence of EBER1 indicates a latent EBV infection.
EBV encodes two small nuclear RNAs, EBER1 and EBER2, which are the most abundant viral
transcripts in latently infected cells. They are non-polyadenylated and thus not translated
into protein. Their function is to inhibit interferon-mediated antiviral effects and
apoptosis. Since they are expressed at high levels (around a million copies per latently
infected cell), they are considered to be an ideal marker of latent EBV infection.
In situ hybridization targeting one or both EBERs is used to determine whether a biopsied
tumor is EBV-related.;
