LOINC description : This is a bioassay to measure herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2).
HSV-1 causes infections of the lips and mouth, such as cold sores and fever blisters.
It is transmitted through saliva. Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can cause genital herpes, a
sexually transmitted disease (STD). Most genital herpes is caused by HSV-2. The bioassay
determines whether a participant is infected with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1)
and/or type 2 (HSV-2), a common infection in the United States. A total of 16.2%,
or about one out of six people aged 14-49 years of age, have genital HSV-2 infection.;
