Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, also known as distal symmetric polyneuropathy is a
leading complication of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes and is responsible for greater
than half of all non-traumatic foot amputations in the US. Incidence of distal symmetric
polyneuropathy increases with diabetes duration with up to 50% of those with diabetes
having the disease after 25 years (Feldman et al., 1994).;
