LOINC long common name : Deprecated PhenX measure - hypomania - mania symptoms;
LOINC description : A questionnaire to assess hypomania (hypomanic episode), a disorder characterized
by periods of persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and can include
inflated self-esteem, increased distractibility, talking and flight of ideas, and
decreased need for sleep (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). The measure is
used to establish a history of hypomania in patients experiencing major depressive
episodes and can therefore screen for bipolar II disorder. Bipolar II disorder consists
of major depressive episodes as well as hypomanic episodes. It has a lifetime prevalence
of approximately 0.5%. Patients with bipolar II disorder are often misdiagnosed with
major depressive disorder as they may either fail to report or be distressed by symptoms
of hypomania. First-degree relatives of patients with bipolar II disorder are more
likely than population controls to have bipolar I and bipolar II, as well as major
depressive disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). Some individuals who
present with major depressive episodes may have a bipolar spectrum disorder.;
