LOINC description : Determining the ratio of urinary-free cortisol to cortisone is useful in evaluating patients with apparent mineralocorticoid excess (AME) syndrome and other forms of adrenal insufficiency. Higher ratios are observed in patients with AME syndrome and indicate insufficient levels of 11-beta-hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11-beta HSD2), which converts cortisol to cortisone. Lower ratios suggests low activity of the 11-beta-HSD1 enzyme, which converts cortisone to cortisol, and may explain reduced effectiveness of cortisone treatment.;
