LOINC description : Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) is an ultrasound technique that is used for the evaluation of osteoporosis. One transducer is placed on either side of a bone, where one transmits ultrasound waves and the other receives them. QUS parameters include broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA), which is expressed in decibel per megahertz, and speed of sound (SOS), which is expressed in meters per second. SOS is correlated with bone mineralization. BUA and SOS can be further used to derive variables including stiffness index, QUS index, amplitude-dependent speed of sound (AD-SoS), and bone transmission time (BTT). Results are reported as a percentage comparing patient values to reference values based on young adults or weight-matched references, depending on the manufacturer. [PMID: 29541626];
