Preferred Label : Brinkman index;
LOINC status : ACTIVE;
Définition CISMeF : The Brinkman index (BI) is a measure of cigarette smoke exposure and is used as a
predictor of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in smokers. In one study,
male patients with a BIs of less than 400, 400-799, and 800 had COPD incidence rate
ratios of 1.2 (0.8-1.9), 2.7 (1.9-3.8), and 4.6 (3.3-6.5), respectively. These results
support a strong dose-relationship between cigarette smoking and developing COPD.
