Preferred Label : pseudo-asymmetric carbon atom;
IUPAC definition : The traditional name for a tetrahedrally coordinated carbon atom bonded to four different
entities, two and only two of which have the same constitution but opposite chirality
sense. The i r/s /i descriptors of pseudo-asymmetric carbon atoms are invariant
on reflection in a mirror (i.e. i r /i remains i r /i , and i s /i remains i
s /i ), but are reversed by the exchange of any two entities (i.e. i r /i becomes
i s /i , and i s /i becomes i r /i ). An example is C-3 of ribaric (C-3 is i r
/i ) or xylaric acid (C-3 is i s /i ) or hyoscyamine (C-3 is i r /i ). The hyphen
in pseudo-asymmetric may be omitted.;
