ICD-11 definition : Cold panniculitis is a distinctive form of injury to subcutaneous fat provoked directly
by cold exposure. Infants are particularly predisposed to this as a result of an increased
ratio of saturated to unsaturated fat at birth with a consequent elevation of the
freezing point of fat (cold panniculitis of the newborn). It may also be provoked
by prolonged exposure to low environmental temperatures. Localised forms include so-called
Popsicle panniculitis involving the cheeks of young children as the result of prolonged
sucking of ice lollies (ice pops), and cold panniculitis of the lateral thighs, seen
particularly in females after prolonged exposure to cold and damp conditions as may
result from horse-riding and motor-cycling and similar outdoor pursuits.;
