ICD-11 definition : Infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues with fungi of the order Mucorales. Cutaneous mucoromycosis may be due to primary inoculation or to haematogenous spread from disseminated disease. Primary infection tends to occur in those with burns or extensive skin trauma (e.g. crash victims) and produces an acute inflammatory response with pus, abscess formation, tissue swelling and necrosis. It may progress to necrotizing fasciitis and/or to disseminated disease. Secondary infection from disseminated disease manifests initially as an erythematous, painful cellulitis which progresses to ulceration and black eschar formation. There is a high associated mortality in both forms.;
