Preferred Label : Cutaneous mucormycosis;
ICD-11 definition : Infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues with fungi of the order Mucorales.
Cutaneous mucoromycosis may be due to primary inoculation or to haematogenous spread
from disseminated disease. Primary infection tends to occur in those with burns or
extensive skin trauma (e.g. crash victims) and produces an acute inflammatory response
with pus, abscess formation, tissue swelling and necrosis. It may progress to necrotizing
fasciitis and/or to disseminated disease. Secondary infection from disseminated disease
manifests initially as an erythematous, painful cellulitis which progresses to ulceration
and black eschar formation. There is a high associated mortality in both forms.;
